Sea to Sky Country Sights

• A WorldWeb.com Travel Guide for Sea to Sky Country, British Columbia.
Driving along Highway 99, also known as the Sea to Sky Highway, visitors are treated to the best of both worlds. British Columbia's Sea to Sky Country not only offers spectacular seaside vistas but also gorgeous mountain scenery. Whether touring the park and garden wonderland of Squamish, the ski dream destination of Whistler or the charming agricultural community of Pemberton, visitors have no shortage of sights and attractions to explore.

SQUAMISH

Close to the cosmopolitan centre of Vancouver, as well as the first-class ski destination of Whistler, Squamish sits in a prime location. As tourists venture around Squamish they can entertain themselves with a medley of sights and attractions like parks and gardens, waterfalls and museums such as the renowned West Coast Railway Heritage Park, which has an impressive collection of railway heritage cars, locomotives, equipment and artifacts.

Although Squamish's location is ideal, so is the community's surrounding mountain and ocean scenery. Visitors can explore the area's natural wonders at a bundle of nearby parks. South of Squamish, the Stawamus Chief Provincial Park protects the magnificent 700-m (2,300-ft) granite cliffs that greet visitors as they enter the community and is hugely popular with the climbing community. Adjacent to Stawamus Chief, Shannon Falls Provincial Park features spectacular waterfalls by the same name that are BC's third largest waterfall. North of Squamish, Alice Lake Provincial Park offers four lakes and sandy beaches, while Brackendale Eagles Provincial Park intrigues many with its wintering bald eagle population.

A couple of places to tour just outside of Squamish on the Sea to Sky Highway include Britannia Beach—home to the BC Mining Museum— and Porteau Cove Provincial Park—which has campsites and captivating views of Howe Sound.

WHISTLER

Located midway along the Sea to Sky Highway is the town and world-famous resort destination of Whistler. Every year, millions of visitors flock to the ski resort of Whistler Blackcomb to experience premiere mountain terrain. Whistler has been highly regarded for its ski facilities for years, but in 2010 the resort town became even more famous as the co-host of the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games' alpine and Nordic events.

Although Whistler is a recreational hot spot in winter, the area is also a beloved summer vacation destination with its lush green scenery, Peak 2 Peak Gondola and Whistler Blackcomb Mountain Bike Park, which has over 200 km (124 mi) of trails.

Even though Whistler brims with recreational opportunities, the resort town also has a variety of attractions such as art galleries, markets and museums like the Whistler Museum. After a busy day of hitting the slopes or mountain biking, visitors can unwind in the heart of the resort in Whistler Village. Fine dining, local shops, cultural venues and more can all be found in the pedestrian-style village.

PEMBERTON

Although only a 30-minute drive north of Whistler, the village of Pemberton exudes a very different atmosphere. Rich with fertile soil and sporting an echanting mountain backdrop, Pemberton is a scenic agricultural community. The village welcomes visitors with a vibrant Old West-looking downtown, shops, restaurants and a collection of attractions. Among the popular attractions in the village is the Pemberton Museum, which features authentic log homes as well as artifacts and displays on the area's culture and history.

Like the rest of Sea to Sky Country, Pemberton has several natural attractions. There are a variety of parks close to the village where visitors can delve into an assortment of recreational activities such as canoeing, snowmobiling and fishing. Close by is the large provincial park of Garibaldi Provincial Park, which features beautiful mountain vistas and superb hiking opportunities. Joffre Lakes Provincial Park is also a short drive away and offers shimmering glacial fed lakes.
